AS I SEE IT April 14: Dynasty, more MAX, and Wrestlemania weekend, indie style

Thoughts on Dynasty...

I think an excellent PPV got spoiled by the finish of the
Jon Moxley- Swerve Strickland main event, with a
Bloodline/House of Torture cluster#%$k finish. Making things
worse is the fact it's the second month in a row for AEW
having a great PPV harmed by such an ending.

I'm hardly one of those dramatic types on social media
saying it'll prevent me from watching Dynamite and Collision
or buying AEW PPVs.

But here's the problem: the real world's burning because of
the insanity in Washington. People are losing jobs, programs
that keep people alive are being slashed or eliminated. Book
banning is going on. Transgender people are being made non-
persons in their own country.

People are seeking escape for a few hours in this particular
athletic soap opera, and when they aren't getting it because
a storyline drags on so long and the payoff seems never to
come...you get reactions from one fan on BlueSky: "I live
in the United States, if I wanted to see a loathsome despot
trample over all resistance and never lose, I could just put
on the news. I don’t need that brand of misery in my
escapism too."

It's an old truth in professional wrestling that the money
is in the chase...but that only works if people see an end
to the story, and the hero winning. You can't keep the
fanbase from getting the happy ending to the story for too
long, or fans find other things to watch or to do.

Last Sunday's Dynasty began one of the most important
stretches in company history. Over the next 90 days:
Dynamite passes Nitro for number of episodes aired with
Spring BreakThru this Wednesday/Thursday, a special three-
hour slot for the April 26 Collision in-between NBA playoff
games from 8:30-11:30 pm ET; the Double or Nothing PPV on
Memorial Day weekend, the Fyter Fest four-hour special in
June, and AEW's first domestic stadium show, ALL IN, in
July. So with all of those important events coming up, Tony
Khan needs to remember that upset fans are less likely to
buy tickets, PPVs, or watch Dynamite/Collision.

At the Dynasty post-show media scrum, Tony Khan was asked
about the negative reaction to the main event for the second
consecutive month, and whether he considered “calling an
audible”, Tony Khan spoke about the result, fan feedback,
and The Young Bucks; he said yes, he listened to fan
feedback, but in his answer... pretty well outlined the
story as he saw it and wasn't changing the plan.

I hope AEW hasn't gone too far with Mox and the Death Riders
in a way that ends up hurting viewership, buy rates, or
ticket sales for those attending live over these next 90
days. Indicators are mixed with ALL IN ticket sales
noticeably down from the previous week, but last Wednesday's
viewership was up post-Dynasty (Collision's ratings aren't
out yet).

Let's hope viewership and ratings stay that way with this
week's loaded Spring BreakThru lineups Wednesday and
Thursday... and that ALL IN sales start to pick up.

Chris Harrington of AEW tweeted late last week that there
has been new content added to MAX. with more 2020 episodes
covering March 18-June 24, including:

* Brodie Lee debut - March 18
* Hikaru Shida vs Dr. Britt Baker, DMD - April 8
* Falls count anywhere tag team street fight - May 6
* Jungle Boy vs Cody Rhodes - May 28
* Best Friends vs Sammy Guevara/Chris Jericho -June 17

It's been suggested that this is a good sign as a good sign
for rolling out content that MAX feels AEW fans are chewing
up older content and they’re trying to get subscribers to
come back for more.

On Smackdown last Friday, they just announced DDP was
inducting Lex Luger into the WWE Hall of Fame, rather than
include Sting, who Luger had also requested.

There had been controversy as to whether or not Tony Khan
would permit Sting to attend the Hall of Fame ceremony,
given his Legends contract. But it appears that WWE never
bothered to ask Sting or AEW.

Tony Khan, time to have Sting show up on this week's Spring
BreakThru Dynamite and let Sting honor Luger yourself on
YOUR show.

Just have Sting come out on Dynamite, acknowledge that
Dynamite surpassed Nitro, and congratulate Luger on his
honor this week on the air. I mean, if WWE isn't going to
ask Sting...then it's fair game for Khan to use the
opportunity to get one over on them.
