AS I SEE IT October 7: AEW finally gets its deal, plus indies helping bigtime

To begin, for anyone who's read the Wrestling Observer
Newsletter or listened to the Saturday Wrestling Observer
Live podcasts, some happy news to start off with this
week...as we all got to read on Twitter Sunday that Jim
Valley got his long awaited kidney transplant. Not much news
available, other than a picture of him with a giant grin in
his hospital bed, and that he's doing well.

Congratulations to him and best wishes!

It was... FINALLY... officially announced Wednesday that All
Elite Wrestling (AEW) has officially signed a new multi-year
multimedia rights deal with Warner Brothers Discovery. The
deal is valued (per Wrestlevotes and Fightful) for three
years with an option for a fourth.

Terms of the contract were not listed in the press release,
but are reported by Wrestling Observer Newsletter to be for
$555 million for three years with $180 million in year 1,
$185 million in year two, $190 million in year 3; and "at a
significantly higher number" in the option year.

Under the new deal, Dynamite and Collision will remain on
TBS and TNT respectively. But for the first time, AEW
programming will stream live on Max simultaneously for U.S.
subscribers and will be available to stream on-demand
starting in January 2025.

“We are honored to announce the extension of our incredible
partnership with Warner Bros. Discovery,” said AEW CEO, GM
and head of creative Tony Khan. “This extension continues
5he tradition of iconic wrestling events broadcast on TBS
and TNT, while also establishing a new legacy for AEW
through weekly live streams on Max for years to come. We
thank David Zaslav, Kathleen Finch and everyone at WBD for
their tireless support of All Elite Wrestling since its
inception, as well as the AEW fans, talent and staff that
helped make this possible.”

The deal also includes enhanced distribution rights across
social media as well as potential new AEW programming on
linear and digital platforms. Furthermore, AEW live pay-per-
views will be available on Max later in 2025 at a discounted
price per event, with all marketing and promotions of those
events exclusively centered on Max.

“Tony Khan and the entire AEW team have been incredible
partners, and we are thrilled to strike this expanded
agreement to deliver amazing new AEW content and stories to
TNT and TBS, as well as bring the thrilling live action to
Max for the first time,” said Kathleen Finch, chairman and
CEO of US Networks for Warner Bros. Discovery. “We are
focused on creating fresh and authentic experiences for
AEW’s passionate and engaged fanbase while also introducing
them to our growing lineup of high-action sports and
entertainment at TNT and beyond."

Warner Brothers Discovery CEO of U.S. Networks Kathleen
Finch also confirmed to the Hollywood Reporter that the AEW
library will also be available on Max. “The benefit now to
WBD is to introduce this terrific event to a streaming
audience, the Max audience, which may not have been exposed
to AEW in any great way until now, starting in January, is
going to have it every Wednesday and Saturday nights, as
well as the library available to stream. So we are really
excited about the growth opportunity and the excitement
opportunity that the fandom can bring once we’ve got a new
platform to expose AEW to..."

There is no mention as of yet of the previously reported
rerun airings of Dynamite and Collision on TruTV, although
since the airings were reported to be reruns... it's
possible no need was felt to mention it (example: FOX
previously aired unadvertised reruns of Smackdown on FS1 and
FS2). It also does not appear that Rampage will be returning
in 2025 as part of this deal, although it's possible that
the proposed Shockwave being shopped to FOX may serve as a
replacement.

Congratulations to Tony Khan, and to all the employees and
talent of All Elite Wrestling who believed in a dream back
in 2019; who somehow survived a pandemic, and along the way
created the most consistently entertaining, athletic and
unpredictable wrestling product of the last 5 years. You
deserve everything you're getting and more.

Congratulations also go out to wrestling media that covered
this story from the beginning, people like Andrew Zarian of
Mat Men Podcast and Beyond The Bell, who had the WBD-AEW
media renewal story correct all the way back to last
January...despite ugly behavior from hundreds of trolls,
obsessive E-stans, podcasters, and "WWE-adjacent" online
wrestling media. For someone who insists on social media
that he "isn't a journalist", he's conducted himself as I
far more than some who claim that they ARE journalists.

The same is true of Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful.com, who has
covered the story all spring and summer during a process
that seemed to go on forever. He covered it despite the same
attitudes and abuse by those that didn't know better, and
too many who did.

Meanwhile, it's Spooky Season. People are out raking leaves
(grrrrrr...) and getting up their Halloween displays. Mariah
Carey is nearly thawed.

As I have since 2017 in this AS I SEE IT blog, I report on
how the independent wrestling community reached out to those
in need.

Independent promotions throughout the United States and
Canada held events and gave back to their community;
collecting canned and non-perishable food and warm clothing,
doing fundraisers for homeless or domestic violence
shelters, animal welfare groups, and those with medical
needs.... and holding lots of Toys for Tots drives. They did
it through (obviously) wrestling shows, plus Comic-Cons,
bowling parties, online trivia contests, chicken BBQ's and a
dozen other means.

Wrestling indies are in the 2024 season of giving... with
106 charity shows/events announced (or having taken place)
so far to help their communities for the Holidays,
collecting donations from fans like you. Many more will do
so over the next four months. Independent wrestling
promotions have at this early stage in 2024 raised
$171,583 cash donations, 10,860 pounds (that's
over FIVE TONS)
