AS I SEE IT
Some more on the human side this week...
The first wrestling I ever watched was that of the old Detroit promotion which had TV on CKLW, Channel 9 from Windsor, Ontario, Canada. It featured The Sheik, Mark Lewin, and of course, Houston Harris, known to the wrestling world as Bobo Brazil. By watching that action on Saturday afternoons; and seeing such craziness as The Sheik "throwing fire" (long before I knew what flash paper was), I got into the unique experience called wrestling at age 7.
Being only seven years old, I didn't yet realize that, besides drawing money, Houston Harris was also breaking some barriers. He was the first black man working some territories...the first nationally known black wrestler that the average Apter mag reader read of, along with Sailor Art Thomas....and the first black man that some of those watching black and white TV screens ever cheered for and could see as a man.
So with that memory in mind, I'd like to give a plug to the Second Annual Bobo Brazil, Sr. Memorial Show. The event will be held January 15 and January 16th, 1999 at the Indianapolis Airport Holiday Inn in Indianapolis, IN. It will consist of the following:
