AS I SEE IT - 4/08/2003:
Overage divas, online fiascos, and... oh yeah, wrestling
by: Bob Magee
Are you dreading seeing more of Rena Mero, the very same born again Christian
who sued the WWF for $110 million, in some sort of bizarre quasi-lesbian
angle with Torrie Wilson?
Is your mind boggled by the prospect of a
weekly interview segment from Roddy Piper, the man who said Vince McMahon
would morally corrupt his son, who swore he'd never come back to the
WWF...who is doing exactly that?
The Piper story took a life of its own
this weekend when, in a stranger than fiction moment, Piper attacked
"certain other wrestlers who NEVER drew any money, plus punks who live
vicariously through the wrestlers" for pointing out what they view as his
hypocrisy. Then, just a day later, his management made an almost comical
attempt to withdraw the remarks and blame "a mystery man from Norway who
hacked their e-mail account" when WWE complained about the
remarks.
Unfortunately for those attempting to withdraw the remarks, Dave
Meltzer came out just hours later on Wrestling Classics and
stated:
"Roddy's people, after WWE freaked out about the e-mail
which just so happened to have the dates he agreed upon to work...write back
to all the same people that their site was hacked (not to mention all the
e-mails to all the people they send e-mails to in the exact order that they
send
e-mails to them in the past) by a mysterious man from
Norway".
I will note that Piper's spokesperson David Penzer
e-mailed me and insists this is all legitimate, so you can make your own
decisions, I suppose.
In any event, if you're tired of overage divas and
online fiascos... and you live in the Philadelphia area, or can get to the Philadelphia area,
you have a major weekend of
quality wrestling (remember what that is?) in store for you.
